Sergeant Major (SGM.) Alvin Moore is a sergeant in the United States Army and a recruiter for the ROTC program. He is also Angela Moore's father. He and his daughter have a slightly strained relationship due to his constant duty to the army, and the fact that Angela's mother left them when Angela was young.
SGM. Moore first visits Angela at Pennbrook (in Angela's Men) when he is sent to recruit some students to the ROTC program. While there, he sees how unhappy Shawn and Angela are and, hearing of their past, reunites them. He also leads a group of student, which includes Shawn, Cory, and Eric, through an ROTC training program. It's difficulty leads to the resignation of everyone. From the experience, he takes an interesting perspective of Eric.

He returns in Angela's Ashes with news that he's been reassigned to Europe for a year. He offers to take Angela with him, and, following an emotional decision by Shawn, departs for Europe with his daughter. While there, though, he enjoys giving Eric a hard time.
The problem with this information is that in Episode 703, Angela's Men, Angela's father comes to recruit for the ROTC program, however his he is wearing a Sergeant Major rank on his uniform. [Major rank from episode 703, Angela's Men] as seen here. It is later fixed in Angela's Ashes. This is a perfect example of televisoin programs portraying military members without properly researching. The same insident occures in the Small budget film Titanic II (2010) when a submarine commander wears a gold oak leaf and his executive officer wears a silver oak leaf. In the military, silver is higher than gold. Proper research is important.
Incidental Information: Based on the badges on his dress uniform Master Sergeant Moore is in the infantry and is Airborne qualified. He also has been deployed over seas for 12 to 17 months. His unit patch indicates he is part of the 2nd Infantry Division in Angela's Men and was transfered to the 101st Air Assault Division in "Angela's Ashes."
Continuity Errors:
Based on his insignia he is actually either a Master Sergeant (MSG) or a Sergeant Major (SGM). When he first appears in Angela's Men there is a star in his rank insignia indicating he is a SGM, but in Angela's Ashes there is no star but still the sergeant stripes with 3 "rockers" underneath indicating he is only a MSG.
